First Impressions - Clients and Candidates

I read a really interesting article on LinkedIn the other day and thought I’d share the info with you as it’s something which is really applicable to all our Clients and all the Candidates who we work with as well.

It’s about making the best First Impressions albeit the Employer or the Employee.  Both parties need to maximize their impact during the first week as this can set the tone for the rest of the working relationship.


  • Why not invite any future starters to any social events you have scheduled. This is a great and really informal way of them getting to know their colleagues and instantly gives them the sense of being in a team. It can also help settle any ‘new starter’ nerves on their first day.
  • Try to make the induction as useful as and informative as possible. The more the new employee knows about you, the more they will feel part of the team.
  • Again the induction process needs to be seamless. Be confident in presenting your business and really know the information you’re delivering.
  • Be interested in your new starter. Getting to know them on more of a personal level will make them feel more comfortable and hopefully increase productivity – they’ll feel more at ease with the responsibilities of their role.
  • Make them feel welcome from the off-set. In the long run, this will improve your business brand and encourage people to want to work for you!


  • Getting to know your colleagues before you start is a great way to settle any nerves you may have prior to starting so if your Employer doesn’t suggest a social meet, why don’t you? This not only shows that you’re eager to start but also suggest that you’re a great team associate.
  • Knowledge is a great thing! Keep in regular contact with your new employer before you start. Ask for company information, any targets / objectives or future goals of the business. Start your first day with as much information as you possibly can.
  • Be receptive to new ideas and ways of thinking. Experience is wonderful, and you’ve been offered the new job based on this, but refrain from saying things like ‘in my last job’, ‘where I worked before’. It’s great to draw on experience, but it’s even better to learn new skills!
  • Stay away from the office gossip! Engage in small conversations with everyone and really get to know your colleagues for yourself, not from others.
  • Finally and probably the most obvious – be punctual, be smart and just do your best! You’ve already done the hard part and got the job offer. These tips will help you pass your probation period and hopefully build a long standing career with your new employer.
