How to identify the right Marketing candidate

With the marketing industry always evolving, there has been a rise in the demand for recruiting marketing experts. Marketing is behind almost everything we see and therefore plays a huge part in the success of businesses. Because of this, it’s no surprise companies are looking for the brightest talent.

Although employers usually know what they want in a marketing employee, finding the right person can be challenging and time consuming. Therefore, we thought we would list a few useful tips to help you identify the right marketing candidate for your business:

Get the hiring process right from start to finish

Being able to identify the right candidate is all about having the right tools and processes to help you, and this can start with the job specification. It’s important when writing a job specification to clearly outline what the “required” skills are for the job and what the “desired” skills are. This way, job applicants can see what is needed and what additional skills may put them at an advantage. This will also create a balance between stating what you want whilst remaining realistic and not scaring off any potentially good candidates. Therefore, creating a good job specification should attract the right candidates from the beginning of the recruitment process.

Ask the right questions

When it’s time to interview candidates, it’s important to ask the right questions so you can identify the candidate’s skills, values, and work ethic, and whether these are in line with what you are looking for. Having more than one person involved in the recruitment process will be a useful way to assess the suitability of a candidate as interviewers may form various opinions, meaning you can gain different perspectives.

Skills and Experience

Finding out about a candidate’s marketing experience is key in identifying the right person for the job. Asking them about what they did in previous roles, about any formal qualifications they have, and how they have progressed over the years in their chosen field will allow you to assess their skill level and highlight whether the candidate has a real passion for marketing or not. When asking about their past and present roles, this is also a good opportunity to evaluate how ambitious the candidate is. With marketing always evolving, adaptability is also a valuable skill, as well as communication and the importance they place on customer service. One thing to remember is that however skilful the candidates are, in addition to this they need to be a good fit for your team and your business.
