Planning for Peak Season
With Logistics being one of the largest sectors in the UK, there is a huge demand for employees, especially when it comes to the peak season. This time of year can be an exciting one for many, with the festive season getting closer, however in the Retail and Logistics industries it is the busiest period requiring months of planning in order to meet customer expectations.
Preparing in advance to meet the demands that this time of year brings is critical, and so planning usually commences at least 3 to 5 months prior to the Christmas period. This all comes down to ensuring customers’ expectations are met and achieving a high level of customer service.
One area where planning is essential, is ensuring there is enough staff, including the correct volume of drivers, available for this busy time. With more stock having to be transported between manufacturers, warehouses and retailers, more drivers are required to ensure that timescales and objectives are met.
One effective way to begin the planning process is by analysing the strategies used in previous years at these peak times and seeing how these could be improved. This can also be used to predict the quantities of orders to be expected, resources and warehouse space needed which will provide insight into the amount of staff required. Planning with past experiences in mind will also allow for tasks to be prioritised and to put processes in place to manage any potential problems which may arise.
This increased level of activity at this time of year can be very hectic, however planning in advance to ensure the right staff are there will increase efficiency and allow operations to run much more smoothly.
